Background: Aspergillus is a fungal genus consisting of several hundred species. Aspergillus species are ubiquitously found and some species can cause opportunistic infections such as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, pulmonary aspergilloma and invasive aspergillosis. Aspergillus fumigatus is the one most often Aspergillus species causing disease. However, other species than A. fumigatus, in particular A. terreus and A. flavus but also A. niger, A. nidulans and A. ustus have gained greater clinical significance. Invasive aspergillosis is increasingly recognized as a primary cause of morbidity and mortality especially in immunocompromised patients. The early diagnosis improves prognosis. Aspergillus-PCR gains more and more importance in the diagnosis of an Aspergillus-infection.

MycoReal Aspergillus is a real-time PCR detection assay for rapid and sensitive detection as well as differentiation of 5 medically important species of Aspergillus (A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. nidulans, A. niger and A. terreus). Species can be differentiated by specific melting curves. By using species-specific probes the test is highly specific for Aspergillus. The identification of the species allows a first conclusion on a possible antimycotica resistance behaviour.

Since MycoReal Assays (MycoReal Aspergillus, MycoReal Candida, MycoReal Pneumocystis and MycoReal Fungi) use identical temperature/time profiles, they can be combined in the same LightCycler® run. This allows the detection of a wide panel of pathogenic fungi within only a few hours.
