Background: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a Gram-positive, zoonotic bacterial pathogen of pigs and wild boars. It is associated with fever, sudden deaths, respiratory problems, pneumonia, meningitis and fertility problems in pig herds, representing a substantial economic burden for the pig industry. Streptococcus suis responds to ampicillin and amoxicillin treatment. Transmission from swine to human is possible, causing mostly bacterial meningitis.

BactoReal® Streptococcus suis is a detection assay for rapid and sensitive detection of the fbpS gene of Streptococcus suis by real-time PCR.
