Background: Candidiasis is a yeast infection caused by different Candida species. Candida can cause opportunistic infections of the skin and mucosa as well as invasive infections. Invasive fungal infections are increasingly recognized as a primary cause of morbidity and mortality especially in immunocompromised patients. Candida albicans is still the predominant species causing diseases. However, other species than C. albicans, in particular C. glabrata, but also C. tropicalis, C. krusei, C. parapsilosis, C. dubliniensis and C. lusitaniae have gained greater clinical significance.    

Description: MycoReal Candida is a real-time PCR detection assay for rapid and sensitive detection as well as differentiation of 7 medically important species of Candida (C. albicans, C. dubliniensis, C. glabrata, C. krusei, C. lusitaniae, C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis). Species can be differentiated by specific melting curves. By using species-specific probes the test is highly specific for Candida. The identification of the species allows a first conclusion on a possible antimycotica resistance behaviour. Since MycoReal Assays (MycoReal Aspergillus, MycoReal Candida, MycoReal Pneumocystis and MycoReal Fungi) use identical temperature/time profiles, they can be combined in the same LightCycler® run. This allows the detection of a wide panel of pathogenic fungi within only a few hours.
